My interest in sport goes back to my childhood, where as a person of color residing in a community where I was the minority, the universal acceptance tool for me was having fun through sports. As children, we didn't care about what the other players looked like, we just wanted to have fun. We played baseball until late, enjoying the outdoors and each other. This was for me a memorable time. As a parent residing in an area full of diversity, our issue as a community is not that we are the minority but that the different ethnic groups do not band together. Our usage of soccer as a universal tool to bring together young boys from newcomer immigrant communities in our area has gone a long way to bridge tribal rifts as well as local community rifts. When the boys are on the field, they don't remember that another boy is from a rival tribe, they just want to have fun.
