Updates from your Sport Matters Group - June 2018

SMG met with officials from the Minister of Health’s office this week to discuss the impact of Bill S-228 for the national sport organizations. While the Bill currently lists ‘community sport sponsorship’ as an exemption, SMG communicated that the exemption needs to be clarified and include national and provincial sport organization programming. The Bill is expected to be passed in the House of Commons in September when the House resumes. SMG will be working with Health Canada officials on the regulations and will provide updates as the work proceeds.

SMG will be submitting a brief to the Standing Committee on Finance in early August. The Finance Committee has decided on a broad theme of “competitiveness” and is looking for recommendations for federal government policies that will “help grow the economy in the face of a changing economic landscape.” SMG will be making the case to increase core funding provided as part of the Sport Support Program. SMG will be hosting webinars in early July seeking additional input from NSOs/MSOs and ideas for the Brief.

Lobby Day 2018/19
SMG will be coordinating a Lobby Day event in 2018/19 to reinforce the messages in the submission to the Finance Committee and to influence policy platforms around sport, physical activity and recreation as Party’s begin to plan for the 2019 election. Once a date is confirmed, invitations will be sent to all SMG contributors.

Common Good Retirement Initiative
You recently received an email from Lindsay about a coalition of prominent nonprofit leaders, foundations, and retirement security specialists who are spearheading the Common Good Retirement Initiative.  The aim is to offer nonprofit employees and freelancers a convenient, low-cost and effective way to save for their retirement, as well as provide nonprofit employers an easy way to help their employees build long-term financial security. If you have not already, please complete a 5-10 minute survey at commongoodplan.org/survey that will help them better understand the nonprofit and charitable sector’s retirement needs and offerings.  If your organization is able to distribute the survey (available in French and English) via your mailing list, please email info@commongoodplan.org so a unique link can be provided to you.
