Sport Matters Working Group

Sport Matters believes in a Sport System that is . . .

Accessible: Sport is a right for all Canadians regardless of race, geography, economic status, age, gender, disability or language.

Participant-focused: Athletes are at the core of the sport system and must be supported in a holistic way.

Equitable: Equitable treatment is a fundamental value for all Canadians participating in sport.

Shared leadership: Governments, sport organizations, educational institutions and individual participants share responsibility for a seamless sport continuum.

Fair: Fairness and fair play are inextricably linked to the positive sport experience.

Values based: Values are the essence of sport: playing fair, following the rules, respecting your competitor and being tolerant of others.

We believe that Canadian Sport needs . . .

. . . a vertically integrated system that encompasses entry level recreational sport through to podium performances at the international level. The Government of Canada, in cooperation with P/T governments and the sport sector, needs to lead a truly national strategy and adopt a clear, strong policy on amateur sport that will influence delivery at all levels. We believe that sport encompasses physical activity, physical education and healthy lifestyle choices.
